General Info

If you’re craving bold Mexican flavors in San Jose, Tacos El Chilanguito is one of those low-key spots that quickly wins you over. Tucked along Phelan Avenue, this casual diner-style restaurant keeps things simple but satisfying, focusing on authentic street-style dishes that feel both comforting and packed with flavor.

The first thing that stands out when you look at the menu is how focused it is. Instead of trying to do everything, this place leans into what it does best. The Pastor Quesadilla is a must-try-crispy on the outside, loaded with juicy, marinated pork, and balanced with melted cheese that pulls everything together. It’s the kind of dish that feels indulgent without being overwhelming. Right alongside it, the Pastor Torta delivers a different experience: soft bread, savory filling, and just the right amount of richness to keep you coming back for another bite.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, the Tacos de Tripita are worth exploring. They’re cooked to a perfect texture-crispy yet tender-and offer a deeper, more traditional flavor profile. It’s clear from the first bite that the kitchen knows exactly how to handle its ingredients.

The setting matches the food-laid-back and approachable. With outdoor seating available, it’s easy to enjoy your meal in the fresh air, especially during warm evenings. The vibe is casual, making it a great stop whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or hanging out with friends. Plus, the free parking lot takes away the usual stress of finding a spot, which is always a bonus in this area.

Another thing that makes this restaurant stand out is its late-night food service. Whether you’re wrapping up a long day or just looking for something satisfying after hours, it’s a reliable option. The small plates format also makes it easy to mix and match, so you can sample different items from the menu without committing to just one dish.

From the flavors to the atmosphere, everything about this location feels genuine. Reviews often highlight the consistency, and after spending some time here, it’s easy to see why. The experience feels effortless, the food speaks for itself, and the overall vibe keeps things relaxed and welcoming.

“ Love this cafe, it's very reasonably priced, I have visited a few times over the past 2 years. Coffee tastes soooo much better than big brands like Costa, Starbucks, Pret a Manger, etc.! The almond croissant is delightful, great sweet snack with a coffee. Today tried the iced Americano for the first time, it was lovely and refreshing! Staff are very friendly and accommodating. It's the only cafe I've visited where the staff have dissolved the sugar in the espresso before making the iced coffee as requested. Would recommend 100%! ”

“ We were not sure were to dine for the night out after a walk our, but turned out to be a perfect example of a Italian restaurant, with genuine Italian waiters , genuine italian food and italian music. We had the chicken liver pate, in house made, absolutely beautiful, pasta carbonara was amazing! Si was the lasagna ! Bellisomo! ”

“ A little bit of Italy in the heart of Durham. Proper authentic Italian cafe atmosphere and food in this cosy hideaway. Pizza's are beautiful and at a great price, try the potatoe skins on the side which are a tasty change from fries. Run by a friendly Italian family and if you speak the language you'll feel right at home. Highly recommended for cafe drinks or a bite to eat at any time. ”

“ Very comfortable seating and very good atmosphere. Very friendly staff with fast service and amazing food for good prices. The staff are also very helpful and understanding when handling food for vegetarians and make sure no meat contact is made. 10/10 highly recommended ”

“ I was looking for a nice little café to sit outside in the sun with my dog and came across Capriccio’s. The service from the young lady and gentleman was great and the pizza was beautiful! My food arrived quickly & I was welcomed inside to make payment where jars of cannoli caught my eye… a couple of chocolate ones to go and I was wished a good day. I’ll definitely come back here :) ”

“ Best pizzas! Super authentic. Tiramisu was too sweet but the coffee was amazing! As good as in italy! I loved the crab ravioli but it could be made tastier and fresher! Barely tasted any crab in it! Overall if you like pizzas and coffee, this is the best place! Super authentic as well! ”
